Op-Ed: Nietes needs to focus on Juan Estrada after clash with Garcia

Estrada, who is the current WBA (Super) and WBO Flyweight Champion is very popular among Latino and Filipino fans and a possible showdown against Nietes could generate substantial revenue for them and their promoters.

A more lucrative fight for Nietes if he gets past Garcia Saturday night would be against pound-for-pound king Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.

Nietes needs to move up to the 112-pound weight limit to face Gonzales, but while Nietes is finalizing his move to catch Gonzales at 112, the 28-year old unbeaten Nicaraguan fighter is reported to be moving up a notch higher at 115 pounds, possibly in search for fights that pay well.

Gonzales is reportedly asking a minimum of $1 million for a rematch against Estrada but the initial talks failed to gain traction possibly because of the prohibitive purse the Gonzales camp is asking.

“I would like to sincerely fight Estrada and want to get paid what we deserve,” said Gonzalez late last year, “I would want $1.5 or 1 million. If not, there won’t be anything. Estrada is the one who is pushing to fight me. I already beat Estrada,” he added.

Nietes
could still chase Gonzalez later when he is settled at the Flyweight limit of 112 pounds. Gonzales would have moved further up to 115 by then but they could meet somewhere in between if the prize is right,

Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Nietes is better off targeting Estrada for his next fight at 112. He needs to move up because there is no one in the Junior Flyweight limit who can put up a good fight or one who can offer an attractive purse.

But first, he needs to dispose Garcia, who is out to avenge the loss of his twin brother to Nietes five years ago in the same venue where they are set to face each other Saturday night for Nietes’ WBO Flyweight title.
