article imageOp-Ed: Nietes needs to dispose Sosa for shot at Chocolatito or Estrada

By Leo Reyes     Sep 20, 2016 in Sports
Donnie Nietes' debut at 112 pounds flyweight limit against Edgar Sosa of Mexico this Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California is crucial in his search for more lucrative fights as he prepares to wind down his long-running boxing career.
Moving up in weight was a difficult decision for Nietes to make because he had to give up his light flyweight title which he defended and kept for many years.
But Nietes had to decide whether to stay as the reigning champion with limited choice of opponents or to go for the needed transition to the next weight limit where more lucrative fights await. Nietes chose to move on to the next level to be at arms-length with either Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez or Francisco Estrada.
While he did not admit the real reason for his move, Nietes' debut in the full Flyweight limit marks the beginning of his search for lucrative fights which he could not find in the Light Flyweight division.
"I believe I'm done with the 108-pound division. There's no one else for me," he said. "I want to go after the other world champions out there. One world champion at a time, but I want to fight more if I can," Nietes said.
But first, Nietes has to kick Sosa out of the way to send a strong message to either Gonzalez or Estrada that he is ready for the challenge.
The 37-year-old native of Mexico City is a tough foe for Nietes. While Sosa has lost nine of his 61 career fights, he is a former world champion, having won the WBC Light Flyweight title from Nietes' compatriot Brian Viloria in 2007.
If Nietes gets past Sosa, he needs to get used to the the flyweight limit by picking on a less dangerous challenger in the division for his post-Sosa fight. Then he can confront either Gonzalez or Estrada for the richest fight of his boxing career.
