This could be an indication that he is transitioning from his boxing career to become a full-time promoter with the view in mind of building up his Mayweather Promotions brand.
Mayweather, who has been using Golden Boy Promotions to promote his fights, is getting personally involved in several major boxing events which are being promoted by his own company, the Mayweather Promotions.
Last year, Mayweather got the license for Mayweather Promotions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to stage boxing fights in the state of Nevada. Mayweather Promotions has already secured license in Washington and New York.
After receiving the license from NSAC, Mayweather said he wants Mayweather Promotions to do big fights in Las Vegas.
“We want to get things done the right way and continue to bring big fights to Las Vegas even when my career is over,” Mayweather, who lives in Las Vegas, told the commission. “We can continue to do record-breaking numbers after I’m gone by doing it the right way,” said Mayweather when he received the license last year.
For his part, Leonard Ellerbe, the Chief Executive Officer of Mayweather Promotions, said he has put together a good team to get things moving.
“We’re very excited as a team. We’ve taken our time and that’s been the most important thing, putting the right pieces in place,” Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com following the hearing. “I have a tremendous staff and we have the necessary pieces in places to be very successful.”
One of the big cards Mayweather has personally endorsed following his unanimous decision wing against Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao is the Broner-Porter fight, which top-bills the Premier Boxing Champions event.
But according to veteran boxing writer Dr. Ed dela Vega, there were few fans who attended the weigh in event.
“The potential fireworks tomorrow however, has not generated lots of boxing fans in Las Vegas. The Arena doors were opened at 1:00 and up until 3:00 when the fighters stepped on the scales, only a few die-hard folks were seen at the cavernous arena. At least there were 1000 folks inside,” dela Vega said.
The Broner-Porter bout is a non-title fight but there were reports earlier that the winner could have a slim chance of facing Mayweather on Sept.12.
Mayweather has not announced his next opponent but there are indications he will face either Amir Khan or a possible rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez. Other than Porter and Broner, several names have also been mentioned including Keith Thurman, Gennady Golovkin and Andre Berto.
