Op-Ed: Mayweather sounds like giving up 2 weeks before fight night

In almost all of his most recent fights, Mayweather had always appeared upbeat about winning and getting his fights done according to his plan.

But in his upcoming fight against Pacquiao, he sounds like he is ready to give up even before the fight starts, as shown on his statements two weeks before fight night.

Instead of usual spiels designed to hype the fight and scare his opponent out of his wits, Mayweather is now telling his fans that he no longer enjoys the sport and even talked of retirement right after his completion of contractual obligations with CBS/Showtime.

Mayweather has a $200 million six-fight contract with Showtime and he is now about to deliver his fifth fight under the contract. He needs to fight one more time after the Pacquiao fight and he’s done with Showtime.

“I don’t enjoy it like I once did,” Mayweather told reporters during his recent media workout. “It is at a point where it is business. It is my job. I go to the gym. I train. I know what I have to do…There was a time when it was fun but I am to a point now where I am really over all of that stuff.”

Mayweather even announced that his last fight would be in September this year.

But Mayweather seems to be giving mixed signals as he also talked about the quality and entertainment value of the fight.

“He’s a future hall-of-famer. I am a future hall-of-famer and we are meeting at the pinnacle of our careers,” Mayweather said. “From the matchup, it is going to be a very exciting fight. Our styles are totally different. I fight with smarts. Every move is calculated. Every move is thought about,” he added.

While Mayweather appears upbeat about the financial success of the fight in which he or his own Mayweather Promotions acts as the lead promoter, his statement about loss of appetite for the sport that made him a millionaire many times over, simply sends a wrong signal to his supporters.

For others — including people at the opposite camp — it could mean that Mayweather has given up hope of winning against Pacquiao and it would certainly give the Filipino star and his trainer more reasons and options to make use of the situation to their advantage.
