Op-Ed: Mayweather’s Pacquiao compliment could be part of rematch plan

In a recent interview with Ben Thompson of Fighthype, Mayweather said Pacquiao is a lot better than he thought he was. which is the reason why the Filipino star has gone far in his career.

“If Terence Crawford happens to fight Manny Pacquiao, I want to let him know that it’s not going to be easy. Even though I know I made it look easy, it’s not going to be easy,” Mayweather said.

Crawford, the current WBO light welterweight champion, is the front-runner in the race for a lucrative fight against Pacquiao for his farewell fight. Amir Khan and Timothy Bradley are also being considered

“The motherfucker can fight. He’s a lot better than what I thought he was. From me being in the ring with Manny Pacquiao, I take my hat off to him and I can see why he went so far in his career,” said Mayweather, who surprised everyone with his generous compliments about his old foe.

Mayweather has always been critical of Pacquiao’s capability and accomplishments, and to hear him say pleasant words about Pacquiao is something fans do not expect, unless he has something in mind that could please fans and trigger a serious discussion about the planned rematch.

To explain his point, Mayweather referred to the Crawford-Gamboa fight, which happened last year in Nebraska. Crawford knocked out Gamboa in the ninth round.

“Not taking anything away from Yuriorkis Gamboa because I think he didn’t fight Yuriorkis Gamboa at 100%, but I don’t ever want to take anything away from Terence Crawford because I like that kid. I really, really like that kid. I don’t want to take anything away from him because he can really fight. He can fight, but I don’t want him to think that just because I made it look that easy with Pacquiao, it’s going to be that easy.” Mayweather said.

While Mayweather already announced his retirement right after his fight against Andre Berto last Sept. 12, fight fans are still hoping Mayweather will reconsider his decision and grant Pacquiao’s request for a rematch.

The most compelling reason why Mayweather would likely come out of retirement is still the huge amount that he will make in the proposed rematch. At half of the 4.4 million PPV purchases he made with Pacquiao, the rematch would still be the second-highest grossing fight in boxing history.

Neither Pacquiao nor Mayweather will let the rare opportunity pass while the fans are still clamoring for a rematch to find out who indeed is the better fighter between them and to finally put closure to their long-running rivalry.
