Op-Ed: Mayweather-Pacquiao saga continues with mockery outside the ring

In the most recent sports and entertainment headlines, world’s richest athlete Floyd Mayweather poked fun at his former foe Manny Pacquiao in his Instagram post by confronting and slapping a punching dummy while talking to Pacquiao.

Mayweather imagined that Pacquiao was in front of him as he confronted the Filipino boxing star about his injury claim as the reason why he lost in their May 2 encounter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“So Manny, you are here telling people that I didn’t win fair and square. That this little arm is messed up. Is that right…ha? Talk to me,” Mayweather said as he slapped the punching dummy twice.

While Mayweather usually taunts Pacquiao with his skill and superiority in the sport as well as his lavish lifestyle, Pacquiao gets back to Mayweather with humility and kindness.

Before this video was posted on Mayweather’s Instagram account, Pacquiao had posted a photo of him enjoying his meal in a small and cramped room in his own place in Sarangani Province in Southern Philippines.

“Kahit saan tayo, makakakain tayo ng magana. Kahit sa lapag lang tayo matulog, makakatulog tayo ng mahimbing,” (Wherever we are, we can eat heartily. Even on the floor, we can sleep soundly) Pacquiao, who on Tuesday was ranked second just behind Mayweather on the list of highest paid celebrities in the world, told Spin.ph.

“Hindi naman balakid sa tao ang maging masaya kahit na kakapurit lang ang bagay na pinanghahawakan niya. ‘Yun din gusto ko ipakita sa mga kaibigan ko,” (It is not an obstacle for a person to be happy even if he only has a small possession), he added.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao saga isn’t only about who between them is the better fighter but through the years it has given people in general and fans in particular the option to choose who between them is deserving of emulation.

It appears that mocking, insulting or poking fun at each other have something to do with their plan to do a rematch next year.

If it is true, boxing fans can expect more insults, mockery, provocation and other informal digs in their social media accounts to get the fans entertained or even angered depending on whose side they are tuned in.
