Op-Ed: Mayweather, Pacquiao owe fans one good, legit fight

Boxing fans who feel aggrieved of what they call a fraudulent “Fight of the Century” that they got for paying $100 to watch it want their gate and pay-per-view (PPV) money back. Most of the plaintiffs are also suing for damages.

It appears the cases that have already been filed in various courts in the U.S., as well as future lawsuits in relation to quality of the fight, will not hold in court according to legal experts.

Daniel Petrocelli, Pacquiao’s legal counsel in the U.S., says his client was injured nearly a month before the fight and not immediately before the fight as alleged in some of the lawsuits.

“The lawsuits are factually wrong and legally wrong, and we expect they will be dismissed in due course,” Petrocelli said in a statement a few days after the fight.

“It claims Pacquiao was injured (immediately) before the bout and that’s not true — he was injured (nearly a month) before the bout, was examined by doctors and cleared to fight,” Petrocelli clarified.. “And he was examined by the commission right before he fought.”

In the Philippines, noted lawyer Howard Calleja said the cases filed against Pacquiao in the U.S. will not prosper and will likely be dismissed by the courts.

Calleja said Pacquiao performed well during the fight despite his injury.

“If he did not disclose the injury, we wouldn’t have known that there was something wrong, meaning that the way he performed… it is as if he was not hurting,” Calleja told ABS-CBN News.

While the defendants are not bothered by the lawsuits, the promoters including Mayweather, who promotes his own fights and the networks (CBS/Showtime and HBO) should now assure the public that they will get their money’s worth in a rematch that could take place as soon as Pacquiao has fully recovered from his shoulder injury.

They could even offer a 50 percent discount on pay-per-view and tickets for the proposed rematch provided that the complainants can present proof that they paid $100 for the May 2 fight.

If the stakeholders are sincere in their desire to address the issue with fairness, they can find a way to make a compromise and the best option is for them to make arrangements for an immediate rematch.
