Op-Ed: Mayweather could opt for easy return fight to ensure 50th win

Before his retirement last year, Mayweather had already tied Marciano‘s career record of 49 wins when he retired from boxing in 1955 after his knockout win against challenger Archie Moore at the Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York, to retain his world heavyweight title.

Mayweather strongly hinted at coming back last Saturday in an interview with Jim Gray of Showtime at the DC Armory where he staged the middleweight championship fight between Lucian Bute and Badou Jack which his company promoted.

“Yes, I’m happy to be where I’m at,” Mayweather said to Gray. “Everyone is asking, asking me, ‘Is Floyd Mayweather coming back?’ Right now, I’m happy on this side [of the ropes], but I’ve been talking with CBS and Showtime and you just never know. But for now, I’m happy on this side.”

“As of right now, you know, some crazy numbers have been thrown my way, upwards of, of course, nine figures. I’m truly blessed, way beyond belief. I don’t know what we’re going to do, but right now, I’m happy being on this side helping fighters.” he added.

Mayweather seems to be considering a similar arrangement with CBS/Showtime where he signed a $200 million six-fight contract in 2013.

“If I came back, of course, it would have to be a nine-figure payday and probably a championship fight and a nine-figure payday,” he said.

While Mayweather could be eyeing an easy fight to ensure his victory, he also wants to face a guy who is a major title holder to boost the marketability of his succeeding fights.

Mayweather’s impending comeback fight may not even make 20 percent of the pay-per-view buys that he and Manny Pacquiao made last year. But it would help him in selling his subsequent fight as he would be sporting a world title.

After his retirement last year, Mayweather has been stripped of all his titles including the WBA (Super), WBC, Lineal & The Ring Welterweight titles.

A win by Mayweather on his comeback fight could lead to a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in the first half of next year.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum said it is obvious Mayweather is coming back and if he picks Pacquiao, there is a likelihood the fight will make at least 50 percent of the 4.6 million PPV buys which they did last year.

“Obviously, he’s coming back,” Arum said of Mayweather. “And I can’t see him making the kind of money he’s talking about with anybody other than Manny.”

“If they fight anybody else, there’s going to be that hangover. If they fight each other, people will be attracted to the fight. It won’t do what the last fight did, but it might do 50 percent of the last fight,” he added.

Pacquiao has announced his retirement after beating Timothy Bradley last April 9 but he is leaving his options open for a possible comeback fight.

Less than a week before the May 9 general elections in the Philippines, Pacquiao, who is seeking a senate seat has landed at the No. 3 spot in the last SWS election survey of the Top 12 possible winners.
