Ricardo Mayorga targets lucrative fight against Antonio Margarito

Mayorga (32-9-1, 26 KOs), who is known for his trash talks to hype his fights, is coming off a KO loss to Shane Mosley last year before taking on Zepeda at the Chaman Bar in Managua, Nicaragua.

Before losing to Mosley, the Nicaraguan fighter has won over Allen Medina via TKO in Oklahoma City followed by another victory over Andrik Saralegui in Managua. Both fights happened in 2014.

The aging ‘El Matador’ (now 43) could have won all his fights since losing to Miguel Cotto via TKO in 2011, if not for his loss to Mosley in August 2015.

Mayorga is a crowd-drawer and a fight against Margarito, who is a former three-time world welterweight champion, could attract fans who enjoy his antics in the ring.

“Thanks to God and my team, we were in perfect condition [on Saturday]. I want to fight Antonio Margarito from Mexico. I can go down to 160 pounds, I have no problems with coming down to that division,” said Mayorga.

After a six-year layoff since his loss to Miguel Cotto in a long-delayed rematch which took place at the Madison Square Garden, New York in 2011, Margarito (40-8-1, 27 KOs) won his last two comeback fights last year.

To shake off his ring rust brought about by his long period of inactivity, Margarito fought Jorge Paez, Jr. in March last year which he won via a unanimous decision. Last August, he won a split decision over Canelo Alvarez’s brother Ramon to bag the WBO–NABO light middleweight title.

Margarito is known for his bloody fight against eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao in 2010 at the Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas. The ‘Tijuana Tornado’ was brought to the hospital right after the fight for a fractured orbital bone surgery.

Before the Pacquiao fight, Margarito figured in the highly infamous hand wraps controversy during his fight against Shane Mosley in 2009 where he was found to have worn a glove with illegal inserts.

Margarito is yet to comment on the call of Mayorga.
