Op-Ed: How Pacquiao could campaign, train at the same time for next bout

Clearly there is a conflict is his training schedule which usually starts eight weeks before his scheduled fight. Campaign period for nationally-elected officials starts on February 9 which is exactly two months before his April 9 fight schedule.

Pacquiao is seeking a seat in the Philippine Senate in the May 9 national elections and he has to travel extensively around the country to sell his political platform to the electorate.

In the last survey, Pacquiao ranks between 7th and 10th place in the survey conducted by Pulse Asia for ABS-CBN News last Nov. 8-14, 2015.

While Pacquiao has been a consistent winning candidate since he filed his official candidacy, his ranking could change dramatically when the official election campaign starts on Feb.9.

Pacquiao has to make the most out of his training days in the Philippines and one way to do it is to do most of his physical conditioning activities and gym works in different regions in the country for the first half of his eight-week training period.

Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz has advised Pacquiao to train in the U.S. for the full eight-week schedule in order to avoid distractions which could affect his performance during the fight. But Pacquiao has very little option as the training period coincided with the election campaign.

Since Pacquiao has consistently topped the awareness rating in recent surveys, he only needs to engage the voters to expound on his platform. He could spend two to three days in each of the 13 regions of the country and by the first week of March he would have covered the entire country and then move to the US to complete his training.

Pacquiao is very popular in the countryside and people are expected to troop to his regional training venues to witness his training. After each training session, Pacquiao can deliver his message and shake hands with the voters.

This is the fastest and most effective way for Pacquiao to cover the entire country in four weeks. However, he needs to organized his campaign teams to set up the regional training venues way ahead of his scheduled training so that the electorate will have enough time to see Pacquiao and listen to him in his designated regional training venues.

Pacquiao is set to fly to the U.S. next week for the press conference to promote the April 9 fight along with Tim Bradley and their respective entourage.
