Op-Ed: Cotto-Alvarez bout could eclipse Mayweather Sept. 12 fight

The proposed Cotto-Alvarez fight is still under negotiation but all indications point to a fight that would take place in New York or Las Vegas on Nov. 7 or Nov. 21.

One major hurdle in the ongoing negotiations between the promoters of Cotto and Alvarez is the weight in which they will show in the scale during the weigh-in ceremony, or 24 hours before the day of the fight.

“The contract weight for the fight will be 155 pounds, five less than the middleweight limit of 160 and one over the junior middleweight limit of 154, both sides told ESPN.com. But this is not the sort of catch-weight fight anyone ought to get in a lather over. Neither fighter has any kind of advantage at that weight. In fact, it’s about as even as you could ask for in terms of the weight,” ESPN’s Dan Rafael writes.

Cotto, who fought under the umbrella of Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions for many years is now under contract with Roc Nation Sports while Alvarez is fighting under Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

Cotto (40-4-0, 33 KOs) has won three straight fights since losing to Austin Trout in 2012 and is coming off a TKO win against Daniel Geale last month.

Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is likewise riding on his last three wins after losing to Mayweather in 2013. His last fight was a knockout win against James Kirkland last May 9.

Other than Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather, Cotto and Alvarez are two of the top pay-per-view (PPV) attractions in boxing and it is possible that they could surpass Mayweather’s PPV record for his Sept. 12 fight.

Cotto isn’t a boring fighter to watch and is very popular in the U.S., particularly on the East Coast while Alvarez, who was Mayweather’s opponent when they registered the second highest PPV record in boxing history with 2,2 million buys, is also very popular in Las Vegas and in the Latino community.

Mayweather has yet to disclose his next opponent but he said that he is considering either Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield. Berto and Mayfield won’t help in boosting Mayweather’s own PPV-drawing capability as they are not known PPV attractions.

Aside from Berto and Mayfield, there are at least five other elite fighters who have signified their intentions to face Mayweather in the ring on Sept. 12. They include Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.
