article imageOp-Ed: Chris Algieri beats Manny Pacquiao in race to stardom

By Leo Reyes     Nov 7, 2014 in Sports
Two weeks before his date with Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri is definitely not distracted while on training as he hobnobs with entertainment celebrities in Las Vegas, Nevada.
After a brief rendezvous with media following his confirmation as Pacquiao's next opponent, Algieri and his training crew packed up and flew to Las Vegas, Nevada to train for his showdown with Pacquiao in Macau, China on Nov. 22.
Obviously, Algieri's decision to camp out in Las Vegas for his training in preparation for the Pacquiao fight has something to do with the promotion of his subsequent fights.
Promoter Bob Arum could be laying the groundwork for Algieri's next fight in Las Vegas and while Algieri is holed in the camp, Arum must have thought of introducing Algieri to the Las Vegas audience.
In his effort to build a name in boxing for Algieri, Arum has invited popular entertainment celebrities that include Silvester Stallone, Mike Tyson and Actress Eva Longoria to appear with Algieri in prearranged events with full media coverage.
What transpired after the whirlwind encounter with the celebrities was unexpected and a rare experience for the former low-key kickboxer from New York.
Algieri is a fan of Stallone of the "Rocky" series and got a surprise of his life when he came face-to-fave with the action star.
Algieri said he was pleased to interact with Stallone as the actor wished him well in his upcoming fight against Pacquiao.
“It was the thrill of a lifetime,” said Algieri. “When I put my arm around him to pose for a photo all I could feel were muscles. Boxing owes a great deal to ‘Rocky’ and Sylvester Stallone.”
“Chris Algieri’s story has captured the imagination of the sports world. It’s all you read about in the United States and throughout Asia, not unlike Sly Stallone’s, “Rocky,” which did the same thing in 1976 and won the Academy Award for Best Picture,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.
Algieri also had a brief encounter with former boxing superstar Mike Tyson, who likewise wished him luck.
Algieri's most talked-about brief celebrity encounters was with actress Eva Longoria who shares the boxer's interest in cooking healthy foods. Algieri denied that he is in a relationship with Longoria, who is known for her role in "Disperate Housewives." Algieri said they have not yet dated.
At the moment, Algieri is basking on shared popularity with Hollywood stars but his sudden rise to stardom may be short-lived if he fails to impress Pacquiao on Nov. 22.
Still, the publicity that Algieri is getting at this time could be sustained even with a loss and provided he can show his audience that he is indeed a worthy opponent of Pacquiao.
Algieri is a 10-1 underdog two weeks before the Cotai Arena showdown.
