Op-Ed: Broner better choice than Berto for Chris Algieri’s next fight

Algieri (21-2-0, 8 KOs) is coming off a unanimous-decision win over Erik Bone last December at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The 31-year-old former kickboxing champion shot to stardom when he bagged a lucrative fight against Manny Pacquiao in Nov. 2014 following his victory over Ruslan Provodnikov earlier in June 2014. Algieri lost to Pacquiao by a unanimous decision.

After the Pacquiao fight, Algieri engaged British boxing star Amir Khan in May last year, also at the Barclays Center, but he also lost by a unanimous decision.

Picking Broner over Berto for his next fight would be a better option for Algieri’s promoter because Broner is easier to sell than Berto, who is coming off a loss against Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Broner (31-2-0, 23 KOs) is fun to watch in the ring and even funnier outside the ring with his jokes and plenty of trash talk in the buildup to his fights. He knows how to sell his fights with his knockout scenarios as well as funny and sometimes offensive trash talk.

The 26-year-old fighter from Cincinnati, Ohio is known for his speed and counter punching skill. He is also a power puncher, as shown in his high percentage of knockout wins.

While Broner is entertaining to watch in the ring, Berto is neither entertaining nor exciting and isn’t good at hyping his fights to attract fans. His recent fight against Mayweather drew surprisingly low PPV buys for a typical Mayweather fight, which shows he hardly contributed to the revenue output.

A Broner-Algieri match would be fun to watch as both fighters are noted for their speed, skill and punching power.

“I think that would be a really good fight for the fans because the lead-up and the build-up would be massive, massive,” he said of facing Broner. “You have two very different people from different worlds and the dichotomy of those two personalities I think would be very interesting to see as a build-up to the fight. And then stylistically it could work out to be a really good fight;” he added.

Algieri’s promoter has been credited for signing up big names for Algieri’s late fights despite his less impressive credential (fighting mostly untested opponents) after a career switch from kickboxing.

If both camps can agree on purse sharing and other financial terms, most likely they will consider Broner over Berto for Algieri’s next fight.
