Op-Ed: Brian Viloria could spoil Gonzalez’ reign as pound-for-pound king

His statement could only mean Viloria (36-4-0, 22 KOs) has trained and prepared for the biggest fight of his career after waiting for more than two years.

“This is going to be the best Viloria that people have ever seen,” Viloria said in a conference call.

Viloria should indeed be in top shape in order to survive what Gonzalez has prepared for him knowing that he lacks stamina as shown in many of his fights.

The only way Viloria — the underdog in this fight — can pull off an upset victory is to go for a knockout win in the first half of the 12-round fight.

In some of his bouts — including his fight against common opponent Juan Francisco Estrada — Viloria lost what could have been won fights because of his endurance problem.

Gonzalez (43-0-0, 37 KOs), knows that Viloria is vulnerable in the later rounds and most likely he will unleash his power shots in the later rounds when Viloria would have lost steam.

“Viloria is good, he hits hard. After the sixth round, hell slow down. He has a very good crossover right, but he’s not a boxer who can move. If you cannot dance and have no legs, I will find you. He goes toe to toe because that’s his style of fighting. We have faced several opponents and I was able to knock them down,” Gonzalez said.

If Viloria has worked really hard with his conditioning coach, he should be able to last the distance and hope to win on points. But it won’t be easy to outpoint Gonzalez because his punching accuracy is a lot better than Viloria.

The best option for Viloria is to go for a knockout win in the early rounds by engaging Gonzales in a toe-to-toe attack, and if he is lucky he could score a knockdown that could lead to an eventual knockout.

A loss by Gonzalez will cull cut short his reign as The Ring’s pound-for-pound king which he inherited from Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
