Op-Ed: Bradley fight is test case for Pacquiao’s year-long therapy

Pacquiao’s orthopedic surgeon has reportedly certified that Pacquiao’s shoulder surgery has been successful and declared he is ready to train and face Bradley in the ring on April 9.

For his part, Pacquiao has declared that he is now in top shape after close to a year of therapy. To make sure he gets the desired result when he squares off with Bradley, he has extended his training period from the usual eight weeks to nine weeks.

“We need enough time so we have to start early, nine weeks because of the long layoff,” said Pacquiao, who has been playing basketball to stay in shape.

One of probable reasons why Roach is flying to the Philippines ahead of the start of the usual eight weeks of training would be to make sure that Pacquiao will have two good hands when he faces Bradley in April.

“Me and Manny don’t see each other until we start training camp,” said Roach before attending the second leg of the Pacquiao-Bradley promotional tour in New York.

Roach hopes to find out during the early stage of training if indeed the surgery has been successful. As training and physical conditioning intensify, Roach will be able to prepare Pacquiao for the ultimate test when the eight-division world champ starts intense sparring sessions later in the camp.

While Roach will know during sparring sessions if Pacquiao’s shoulder injury has been fully addressed, it would take a real fight for him to conclude that Pacquiao surgery was a success.

The result of the Bradley fight will allow Roach to assess Pacquiao’s post-surgery performance and to let him know if it is time for Pacquiao to quit or to continue until his contract with Arum expires.
