Op-Ed: Bradley could win against Rios if fight drags to late rounds

Bradley (32-1-1,12 KOs) has a low knockout rating and for him to go for a knockout win would be more risky than the better option of winning on points. Bradley can go for a unanimous decision win against Rios, like what he did with Jessie Vargas and stablemate Ruslan Provodnikov.

Bradley’s new trainer Teddy Atlas must have given specific instruction to Bradley to prepare for a full 12-round fight, as reflected in Bradley’s recent quotes.

“My game plan is to stay totally focused for 36 minutes of fighting. Rios fights hard, is relentless, can endure pain and look for one shot to hurt me. I want this fight badly. I plan to keep it in control my way. Teddy is full of wisdom. Together we are going to win this big fight,” said Bradley, who is aware that Rios can surprise him with his lucky punch.

Bradley said he has prepared for the pressure that Rios will bring into the fight, saying he has sparred with pressure fighters like Rios in the last three weeks.

“Rios can bring on the pressure all night long and we will deal with it. We are prepared for intense pressure. The only chance Rios has is a lucky punch and that’s not going to happen. Teddy Atlas brought in two sparring partners who have put pressure on me every single second for the last three weeks. Rios is living on a prayer and he knows it

Rios (3-2-1, 23 KOs) is a power puncher and most likely he will go for an early KO to avoid going down the stretch with Bradley.

While Bradley intends to drag the fight to the closing rounds, Rios wants to bring the fight to Bradley for quick victory in the early rounds.

“The way to beat Tim Bradley is to put on pressure in the fight and try to knock him out,” Rios’ trainer Robert Garcia said. “We plan to cut off the ring and turn this into a real fight. We are not concerned with his change in a chief trainer because Bradley always comes in top condition and is ready to fight. Joel Diaz did a good job with Bradley.”

Bradley has won fights with his hit and run style and obviously he will use the same tactic with Rios. If it works well with BamBam, he may end up winning the fight on points to keep his WBO welterweight belt.

But Rios is expected to go inside Bradley’s defenses as he is aware that he can take Bradley’s power punches. If Rios breaks Bradley’s defenses, he could land an unobstructed power shot that could spoil Bradley’s plan to win on points.
