article imageOp-Ed: Arum needs to look outside Top Rank roster for next Pacquiao foe

By Leo Reyes     Jun 30, 2014 in Sports
With just three fighters under his Top Rank Promotions (TR) umbrella who can give Manny Pacquiao a good fight on Nov. 22 when he returns to the ring after trashing Timothy Bradley in a rematch, Arum needs to look outside his stable for Pacquiao's next foe
At this time only three fighters under the TR stable have the required credentials for a financially-viable fight.
Arum is putting together a shortlist of fighters that he will present to Pacquiao when they meet to choose opponent for his ring return on Nov. 22.
Pacquiao's choice of opponents is limited to fighters in the welterweight division where he is comfortable fighting although he can also face lightweight fighters who can move up to 147 pounds level where he fought last. Arum can also persuade light-middleweight fighters like Miguel Cotto to come down to a mutually-acceptable weight limit.
At this time, Arum has only three potential candidates under the Top Rank umbrella and they include Juan Manuel Marquez, Carlos Abregu and Jessie Vargas.
Marquez is the leading contender primarily because of his crowd-drawing power in the Latino community. Arum wants to push the Pacquiao-Marquez 5 because he knows that it will make money in the box office. A Pacquiao-Marquez fight has always been money-making for Top Rank.
However, Marquez has been playing hard to get after trashing Mike Alvarado in a non-title fight recently. It appears that he is now opting out of the Pacquiao fight with his whooping demand for a $20 million purse.
But informed sources say Marquez has to deal with the random drug and urine testing that the Pacquiao camp is asking in the wake of the reported visible signs that he was on performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) when he faced Alvarado. Read more.
The other contenders in the TR stable include Carlos Abregu and Jessie Vargas, who are both fighting in the welterweight division.
Outside of the TR lineup, Arum can explore possible linkage with the handlers of Amir Khan, Chris Algieri and Marcos Maidana, among others.
