Op-Ed: Amir Khan won’t have a shot at Mayweather or Pacquiao until 2016

The reason is that Mayweather and Pacquiao will most likely face each other in the ring at least three times — twice this year and another fight early next year — especially if Pacquiao is victorious in their first encounter.

The earliest Khan will be able to face either Pacquiao or Mayweather would be end of next year, assuming that both of them will continue to be active until the end of 2016 or early 2017.

There is a slim chance, however, that if Mayweather wins he may give Khan a shot before the end of this year and do a Pacquiao rematch early next year. Either way Khan’s chance this year is slim because the promoters and the TV networks will try to cash in on a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao regardless of who is going to win on May 2.

Like Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum, Mayweather is also a businessman (Owner of Mayweather Promotions) and as such he cannot close his eyes on the huge revenue a rematch can bring into the coffers of Matyweather Promotions which makes the rematch almost a certainty.

Mayweather knows that no one in the 147 pounds weight limit can bring in more revenues for the promoters other than Pacquiao.

It would be foolish for Mayweather to decline a rematch offer knowing that it will bring another $400 million or even more for him, Arum and the TV networks (HBO and CBS/Showtime).

Khan isn’t the only one in the waiting list for the rare opportunity of facing either Mayweather or Pacquiao. Kell Brook, who is unbeaten and the current IBF welterweight titleholder is claiming that he is the better choice for the Mayweather-Pacquiao sweepstakes.

“There’s only me who’s got a world title,” he said. “What does he bring to the table? I’m a welterweight with a world title, who’s unbeaten. I’m the man who should be fighting the winner of Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Brook says he deserves to be the next opponent for the winner of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight on account of his credentials.

“Yeah, he can get behind me. Why should he be in front of me? He’s had one fight at welterweight. He’s not world champion, why should he be in front of me? He should be behind me.”

Brook has a good argument if his credentials are to be considered for the winner of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight because he is unbeaten in 34 fights with a knockout rating of 70%.

The problem is that Brook is popular only in UK while Khan has a fairly good following in the US.
