On January 26, 1996, the world of wrestling lost one of its finest athletes: world champion and 1984 Olympic gold medalist Dave Schultz.
Team USA dubbed Dave as a "friend, father, husband, teammate and great champion," and rightfully so. He was praised by his peers in wrestling for being "cunning" and for having a "great technique"; moreover, he was described as the "most technical wrestler that America ever had."

Dave was the 1983 World Champion in the sport, and a year later, he took home the gold medal in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in the men's freestyle. He was the older brother of Olympic gold medalist Mark Schultz. Mark wrote about his life and experiences with Dave in his award-winning book Foxcatcher, which was made into an Oscar-nominated feature film starring Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz, Mark Ruffalo as Dave Schultz, and Steve Carell as the eccentric millionaire John du Pont.
