If you’re looking for a great way to beat stress and have a little fun, get out this weekend and try your hand at fishing in Nova Scotia.
Keith Colwell, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture said in a press release, “Whether you’re a seasoned fishing enthusiast or it’s the first time you put your line in the water, I encourage people to come out and fish. Go to your favourite fishing spot or participate in one of the 24 fishing derbies that will be taking place over the weekend.”
A full list of fishing derbies is available on the province’s website.
Sportfishing is one of the province’s most popular outdoor sports with more than 70,000 people participating each year. It also adds $58 million dollars to the province’s economy each year.
One local fishing enthusiast, Brandon McCafferty from Pereau, Nova Scotia, says he’ll definitely be going out this weekend. “I’ll probably go to a couple of locations that I enjoy,” he says, “Probably to Kingsport for some flounder fishing.”
“I’ll most likely head out to Coldbrook as well to see if I could catch some brown or speckled trout. Maybe on Sunday,” says Mr. McCafferty. “Or maybe to Aylesford Lake for some small mouth bass.”
Mr. McCafferty urges people to check out the regulations before they go out, since although you don’t need a license, bag limits do apply.
Colwell is encouraging all anglers to put safety first, especially if you are out on the water. “Sportfishing is a unique and enjoyable outdoor experience, but I would like to remind all anglers to use caution this season and enjoy the outdoors safely. I especially urge those on the water to use flotation devices.”
