Three-division world champion Nonito Donaire secured a unanimous technical decision against Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa after the referee stopped the fight past round 4 due to headbutt.
Rappler's Ryan Songalia reported on his live blog that the fight was stopped due to what appears to be an accidental headbutt by Vetyeka causing serious injury to Donaire's left eye.
With the win, Donaire becomes the new WBA super featherweight champion and a four-division titleholder.
It was Donaire's first fight in the featherweight division after fighting several years in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions. Earlier, Donaire said he intends to fight in the higher divisions in his future fights.
Donaire is the only Filipino professional boxer who has signed up with Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) for a year-round 27/7 random drug testing. The other boxer who is enrolled in the 24/7 random testing by VADA is Edwin Rodriguez of Dominican Republic.
Although there are prominent boxers who have availed of the 24/7 VADA program, including Manny Pacquiao, Timothy Bradley, Ruslan Provodnikov, Guillermo Rigondeux and Joseph Agbeko, among others, most of them have availed of the VADA 24/7 testing only on a "per fight" basis. Read more:
With the win, Donaire has improved his professional boxing record to 32 wins with two losses while Vetyeka dropped to 26 wins with three losses.
It was VetyeKa's first defense of the WBA featherweight title which he snatched from Chis John last year in Australia.
