Nonito Donaire scores second round knockout victory over Prado

It was a lopsided fight in favor of Donaire as Prado looked overwhelmed by Donaire’s sheer ring generalship starting in the first round.

Prado took a lot of heavy punches in the opening round with more telling punches by the end of the round.

In the second round, Donaire caught Prado with a sweeping left hook that wobbled the Brazilian. Donaire followed up with a flurry of punches and uppercuts causing heavy damage on Prado’s right eye.

Referee stopped the fight at 2:16 of the second round to save Prado from further punishment.

“Hard to judge much about Donaire considering the opponent but it’s still clear that he’s one of the heaviest punchers in all of #boxing,” said Ryan Songalia of Rappler, who covered the fight live at the Araneta Coliseum

With the convincing win, Donaire could land on top of the WBC 122 pound limit where he could be headed for a crack at Leo Santa Cruz’ title.

Donaire is coming off a devastating loss to Nicholas Walters of Jamaica via a sixth round stoppage last October.

It was Donaire’s first fight in his native Philippines since 2009. Prior to his loss to Walters, Donaire won his last two fights after losing to Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba.

Donaire is now the new North American Boxing Federation (NABF) champion following his KO win against Prado.

The win improved Donaire’s record to 34-3-0 with 22 KO’s. Prado dropped to 22-5-1, 15 KOs after his loss to Donaire.
