Despite losing just two of their last 10 games and not having much room under the NHL salary cap, it now appears the Toronto Maple Leafs will make a move before the upcoming trade deadline and it could center around a defensive upgrade on the ice.
James Onusko of Bleacher Report has the latest rumors surrounding the team and reported that the Leafs could have interest in Calgary Flames defender Mark Giordano.
The 30-year-old is having a solid season, scoring 28 points, but also providing some muscle on the back end. Toronto is ranked near the bottom of the league in defensive efficiency and that has led to the latest trade rumors.
Another option is NY Rangers Dan Girardi, who's been reported on the trading block before next weeks deadline. Girardi has been having troubles with his team on and off the ice and despite his talent, could have warn out his welcome in New York.
Both these players would give the Toronto Maple Leafs an upgrade in talent on the back line and a veteran influence to help the younger players as the NHL Playoffs approach, but with team chemistry working and the club playing perhaps its best hockey of the year, it could prove fruitless to make a move at this point of the season.
