article imageNHL Scores: Kessel, Bernier lead Maple Leafs past Ducks 3-1

By Larry Seely     Mar 11, 2014 in Sports
Anaheim - Anaheim came into Monday night's contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs looking for a win and a chance to take over the points lead in the NHL, but Phil Kessel and Jonathan Bernier ended the Ducks' hopes as the Leafs pulled out a 3-1 victory on the road.
Kessel had a hand in all three goals, scoring once and adding two assists as his team opened a 3-0 lead early in the second period. Bernier and the Maple Leafs' defense did the rest as the young net minder made 42 saves to send home the sellout crowd disappointed.
Toronto opened the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the first period on a goal by Tyler Bozak. Kessel added another goal with just :39 left in the opening period, giving the Leafs a 2-0 lead.
Paul Ranger made the score 3-0 early in the second period. Corey Perry scored the lone goal for the Ducks late in the period, cutting the lead down to 3-1, but that would be the end of scoring for Anaheim as Bernier made some terrific saves to hand the Ducks their third straight defeat.
The win now has Toronto with the third best point total in the Eastern Conference and just two losses in their last 10 NHL games. The team is hoping this momentum carries over into the playoffs as the franchise looks to make a run at the Stanley Cup for just the second time since the league instituted the salary cap.
