NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs looking to add another first round pick?

Sports Illustrated has reported that several members of management are in Switzerland, possibly to have talks with Mike Futa, rumored to be tops on the list of potential GM’s the club hopes to hire. Futa is currently VP of hockey operations for the LA Kings and his background of finding talented players could have him north of the border in the coming weeks.

While hiring a new general manager is a top priority, finding room under the salary cap and adding depth is a bigger issue. This squad was ranked near the bottom of the league in goals allowed and scoring goals wasn’t much better.

Rumors have surfaced that the Leafs are looking to build through the draft, a move that makes sense with the financial restrictions management has to work with, but the big news is they are possibly looking to deal Phil Kessel to New Jersey for their first round pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

The move would give the front office three selections in the first round and a bit more flexibility under the salary cap, possibly leading to the signing of a veteran free agent or two this summer. A trade like this would allow Toronto to add some young prospects on both ends of the ice and finally build a foundation for future success, rather than a bandage approach that has proven unsuccessful.

Toronto has one of the strongest fan bases in the league, but losing hockey games makes it difficult, even for die-hard supporters, but with a solid hiring at the top and a good summer, it could create the buzz the organization needs heading into the next few years.
