NHL Power Rankings: Maple Leafs expected to struggle this season

Toronto has made plenty of headlines this summer with the addition of goalie Frederik Andersen and first overall pick Auston Matthews, but the Maple Leafs are still struggling with past moves made by the front office and couldn’t lure any big name free agents over the summer. This has lead many to believe this could be another miserable year for the franchise.

The good news for the fans of the team is an influx of youth should add some excitement on the ice. And while they might struggle to win games this year, make no mistake, this club is building a good foundation that will lead to success in the near future.

Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup last year and will enter this season on top of the power rankings, but the Penguins will have plenty of company at the top, including last year’s runner-ups San Jose.

Pittsburgh was able to keep their roster nearly fully intact, while the Sharks added winger Mikkel Boedker, a player that will add a bit more speed on the ice and returns all the key members of last year’s squad. It figures these two franchises will battle for the top spot in hockey all season and it could be decided in a rematch of last year’s finals.

Tampa Bay figures to improve with Steven Stamkos and Ben Bishop returning from injury. The two star players helped this franchise win the cup two years ago and there’s no doubt this squad has the talent to battle for another championship in 2017.

Every season a team comes from the back of the back and makes some noise in the NHL. This year that team could be the Nashville Predators. The addition of P.K. Subban is huge. For a team that was already good on the defensive end of the ice, now it becomes a force — and if goalie Pekka Rinne has a solid campaign, this hockey team could become one of the best in the league this year.
