NHL Trade Rumors: Maple Leafs eyeing deal to add Jacob Trouba?

It’s becoming common place in the NHL for players to demand a trade, especially if they feel playing time is an issue. Last season Jonathan Drouin, Travis Hamonic and Patrick Marleau all asked to be moved early in the year, but surprisingly, all three finished the year with their respective teams.

That doesn’t appear to be a solution for the disgruntled young defender as he has yet to hit the ice, instead remaining at home and waiting by the phone for an eventual solution. Despite Winnipeg having the upper-hand in this situation, it makes sense for their front office to get something for the youngster.

Several teams could have interest, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are in rebuilding mode and looking to build a foundation with young players. At 6’3″ and just over 200 pounds, he has the size the franchise wants and a physical presence on the ice this team needs. But —and there’s always a but — salary cap issues could hinder any possible deal.

The Leafs’ would love to add a player with Trouba’s ability, especially if the price is right, but management won’t strip depth off the current roster to add a third line defender. If Toronto could add the young man through a deal that included a big contract they want off the books or for draft picks, it’s much more likely to happen.

Michael Traikos of the National Post has suggested prospect William Nylander and a future first round pick, a proposal that makes sense and could make this trade happen. The Jets get plenty in return for a player that won’t wear a Winnipeg uniform again and the Toronto doesn’t hurt the team that is in place, but adds another piece that could finally make this NHL franchise a regular contender in the Eastern Conference.
