NFL standings and playoff rankings through week 9

Three teams in the AFC are sitting in a good spot as Denver, New England, and Cincinnati are all 7-0 and leading their respective divisions. This is the first time in league history that four teams are this late into the season without a loss and that should make some great story lines as the year progresses.

The odd team out is Indianapolis as the Colts lead the AFC South with a 3-5 record. With three straight losses, the team fired its offensive coordinator on Tuesday and head coach Chuck Pagano is hearing rumors of his possible demise, but this franchise has the best quarterback in the division and with no team playing well, Indy or Houston could win the division with 6 or 7 wins on the year, not exactly what the league is looking for, but it will make things interesting over the second half of the season.

Oakland is perhaps the surprise story of the NFL through the first half of the year. The Raiders are 4-3, tied with the NY Jets for the two wild card spots in the AFC, but with Pittsburgh, Miami, and Buffalo all with four losses and plenty of football left to play, it makes every game even that much more important.

Carolina is the top team in the NFC at 7-0, but it has a big game this weekend against Green Bay, who sits at 6-1 and on top of the NFC North. Arizona leads out West at 6-2 and the NY Giants at 4-4 are leading the East.

Atlanta and Minnesota re the next two best records in the conference, both teams with just two blemishes on their record, but the Vikings host the St Louis Rams on Sunday, with the winner taking a big step towards making the playoffs.

The Rams are the youngest team in the league and are winning games the old fashion way, with defense and a solid running game. At 4-3 they are in contention, but Seattle and New Orleans are right on their heels as the league heads into week 10.
