The former Michigan State signal caller had his best performance on Sunday as he led a late touchdown drive to help his Redskins defeat NFC East rival Philadelphia 23-20. The 90 yard final drive finished with a four yard scoring strike to Pierre Garcon with less than :30 left in the contest and the 5:39 he took off the clock left the Eagles without enough time to make a late rally.
Cousins finished the game completing 31 of 46 passes for 290 yards, but more important has been his game management, which included zero turnovers and just one sack.
The Redskins defense was terrific in the first half as they held Philly scoreless, but Sam Bradford rallying his troops in the second half with three touchdowns wasn’t enough to pull off a win on the road. Washington finished the game with five sacks, including two in the final few seconds, improving Washington to 2-2 on the year.
Robert Griffin entered training camp as the number one quarterback, but injuries and inconsistent play led to the switch and despite turnover problems in the past, including 23 interceptions in just 17 games, the Redskins former fourth round draft pick was solid on Sunday in leading his team to victory.
Washington will need another excellent game next Sunday when the hit the road to face the red hot Falcons. Cousins will need to control the ball and clock against the high-powered Falcons offense, which has scored 137 points through its first four games, but with a defense that has struggled, the Redskins run game could play a big role in pulling off an upset next weekend.
