NFL News: Cowboys still searching for help in backfield

Joseph Randle was expected to handle the starting duties, but the 23-year-old has struggled to play during preseason because of injuries. Veteran Darren McFadden was signed in the off-season but he’s failed to impress, making it difficult for a team that was one of the top rushing units in football last season to look like a playoff contender this season.

Rumors of a possible Ray Rice signing have been exaggerated, but owner Jerry Jones and the rest of his staff should prepare for the worst, especially if the team gets off to a slow start.

Bleacher Report has suggested that veteran back Pierre Thomas is a good possibility and, despite a strong showing tryout with Houston a few weeks back, the 30-year-old is still a free agent.

Despite going undrafted, Thomas had a solid eight years in New Orleans, rushing for over 3,700 yards and scoring 28 touchdowns on the ground, but what makes this veteran an even bigger threat is his ability to catch the ball and make plays in the open field.

The former Illinois star has 327 career receptions, this despite playing in the same backfield as Darren Sproles and playing at time with four backs in rotation with the Saints. With nearly 10 yards per reception, Dallas would get a solid running back who would help in the passing game and a veteran with playoff experience, something they currently lack as a team.

NFL teams will make plenty of roster moves in the coming weeks and, for a team with problems in the backfield like Dallas, adding Thomas now would not only help the Cowboys but would keep another team from landing a player that could beat them down the road.
