article imageNFL Rumors: Calvin Johnson to Green Bay Packers?

By Larry Seely     Jan 19, 2016 in Sports
Green Bay - Calvin Johnson is one of the top wide receivers in the NFL and it's hard to envision the Detroit Lions without the All Pro, but salary cap issues and the player unhappiness could lead to changes before the start of the 2016 season.
It's been reported that between Johnson and quarterback Mathew Stafford, nearly 30 percent of the team's salary is taken up by the team stars, which leads to questions about how this franchise is to move forward with limited resources.
Michael Dixon of Yard Barker has suggested the two part ways, a move that would allow the Lions to add some key free agents to areas of need and give the future Hall of Fame player a shot at wining a Super Bowl with another team.
Dixon has the Green Bay Packers as one team that would definitely have some interest, especially after Aaron Rodgers suffered through the worst year of his career surrounded by young wide-outs.
The 30-year-old isn't the same player of three years ago, but he can still mange quality numbers as evident by his 88 receptions for over 1,200 yards and 9 touchdowns this season, not bad numbers considering Detroit didn't have a running game and opposing defenses double-teamed the veteran all season long.
Johnson has jaw-dropping stats in his NFL career with 731 receptions for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns. His arrival in Green Bay, along with the return of Jordy Nelson, would give the Pack' one of the best wide receiving duos in the NFL and give Rodgers the help he needs to return to his All Pro status.
There's also been hints Johnson could retire, with one reporter revealing the team could give Megatron a lighter work schedule:
...the Lions could offer Johnson to play on Sundays, then not report to the team again until Wednesday. Players usually report to the team facility on Monday for meetings and treatment, then have Tuesdays off. Wednesday is the first full day getting ready for the next opponent.
But any experts feel a change of scenery could rejuvenate the star receiver and a shot at playing for a Super Bowl could be just what he needs to finish his career on a high note.
