NFL Preview: Top stories heading into regular season opener

The Green Bay Packers were dealt a huge blow to their Super Bowl chances when star wide receiver Jordy Nelson was lost for the year in the preseason, but the team has drafted well and the recent signing of James Jones should help elevate the loss. However, heading into week 1 at Chicago, the team is a bit banged up on the offensive line and quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t have much playing time with his young receivers.

The good news is the team is facing fellow NFC North team Chicago, and they have too many obstacles facing them this season. Look for the Packers offense to get rolling in the second half and come away with the victory.

One of the best stories of the preseason was the play of Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne with San Francisco. Not only did he do enough to make the team, having no experience with American football, he shined when given a shot at both running back and kick returner.

Hayne has captivated the Australian sports world with his play and its been reported that a national TV station has now bought the rights to carry 14 of the 49ers games back in his home country.

San Francisco opens the regular season at home on Monday night against Minnesota and the return of All Pro running back Adrian Peterson. It has all the makings of a made for TV movie and the winner will have some much-needed momentum heading into week 2.

The biggest story in the NFL over the off season was between Tom Brady and the league. It looked for awhile like the star quarterback would miss some games with the deflated ball headlines that hit last season, but he’s playing the opener against Pittsburgh on Thursday night and that has Patriots fans ecstatic.

The Steelers on the other hand are without two of their top play makers on offense, but this game could become a shootout. Las Vegas has the Pats’ favored by a touchdown and playing at home, that could be just what this team needs to get a jump on the rest of the AFC East and start the year 1-0.
