The former Heisman Trophy winner hasn’t played a snap in the league for two years and reports have the 27-year-old as a long shot to even make the Philadelphia Eagles roster. However, a closer look at Kelly’s offense and the player moves the coach has made over the last 12 months makes it evident the former Florida quarterback could become a good investment as a backup.
Tom House has coached several great quarterbacks with drills to improve mechanics and reports have come from Philly that Tebow has shortened his delivery motion and made great strides in making a quicker release. Those attributes along with his skills in throwing the deep pass, could make him a lock for a roster spot if he performs well in the preseason.
While developing a better throwing motion is essential, his understanding of the NFL and reading defense is definitely higher than third-stringer Matt Barkley, who has yet to throw a touchdown pass in the league and looked lost in Kelly’s offense when given a shot at playing.
The backfield for the Eagles is loaded with DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews, and Darron Sproles on the roster and with a stockpile of talent at running back, if an injury to the starting quarterback does occur, Kelly just needs someone to manage a game and avoid turnovers.
With the running ability of Tim Tebow and the leadership he’s shown on and off the football field, his resurrection in Philadelphia could pay big dividends, if not on the football field, than in profits from jersey sells as the former Denver and New England quarterback ranks in the top-20 of all players this off season in merchandise sold.
