Roddy White was released by Atlanta in April and no big news about the Falcons all-time leading receiver has surfaced since, but that changed this week when a report on Twitter stated the 34-year-old wouldn’t mind playing the upcoming football season with Minnesota.
The Vikings wide receiver coach George Stewart has a history with the veteran wide out, having been with the Falcons during the first two years of the former All Pro’s career, which has lead to speculation that the two could reunite with last years NFC Central champions.
With just 43 catches for just over 500 yards last year, some experts expected the former first round pick to retire, but it appears the veteran would like to play at least one more season and preferably with a team that has a shot at winning a Super Bowl.
White has over 800 career receptions and nearly 11,000 yards and while not the play-maker he was early in his career, he would be a great fit for a team looking for some veteran leadership on and off the field and Minnesota fits the criteria.
Rookie Stefon Diggs had a breakout year with over 700 yards receiving, but the Vikings have no other proven talent at the wide receiver position and could use another weapon for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Adding another proven wide out would take some pressure off the running game and help this franchise improve on the good season they had last year.
White wouldn’t be a savior in Minnesota, but he would bring some stability to an offense that must improve for this team to take that next step and with no takers to date, a veteran minimum contract for just one year wouldn’t break the bank and would be a good risk-reward worth taking for both parties.
