The National Football League announced on Sunday that this season's Super Bowl will have a roaring headliner, American pop singer, Katy Perry. Perry, currently touring in Australia, joins formidable company who've done it ahead of her.
The announcement was made during halftime of the Sunday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants (Dallas won, 31-28) and it came from broadcaster Bob Costas.
Perry is in Australia and New Zealand touring her Prismatic World Tour until the middle of December and is then back to the U.S.. She'll take her tour on the road again in mid-February when she goes to Europe but in between will play the Super Bowl.
As a Superbowl halftime performer, the 30-year-old will join the likes of Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Aerosmith, Justin Timberlake, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, The Black Eyed Peas, Prince, Beyonce and Madonna.
Others to do the gig include marching bands, in vogue before the halftime show became an event itself. The University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band did the very first Super Bowl in 1967. In Super Bowl V in 1971, the Southeast Missouri State Marching Band performed with, perhaps incongruously, Up With People.
The Super Bowl halftime show is the most viewed TV performances of the year, every year. It's numbers exceed the numbers of those who watch the game itself. For example, last season the Super Bowl was played on Feb. 2, 2014 in New Jersey (the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos 43-8) and the television audience for the game was 112.2 million. For the halftime show, with Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the TV audience was 115.3 million.
Super Bowl XLIX (49) will be played on Feb. 1, 2015, in Glendale, Arizona. From Australia, Perry noted the announcement on her Twitter feed.
