There’s no question this football team needs to add another weapon for Manning and while the free agent list is thin, an old friend could help. Rumors have Wes Welker as a possible signing before training camp begins and despite injury concerns and age, it makes sense.
Welker knows the offense and scored ten touchdowns just two seasons ago. Yes, he will turn 34 before the start of the next football season and yes he has a history of concussions, but his toughness and veteran savvy could be just what this offense needs after losing Julius Thomas to Jacksonville.
Reports have also surfaced on possible selections in the upcoming draft that could help, but with the age of Manning, this team is on a must-win now situation and finding a youngster to provide immediate help is a big ask.
Another option is an ex-team member from the Indianapolis Colts. Reggie Wayne is 36-years-old and still unsigned. Despite his age, Wayne has a connection with his former quarterback and could resurrect his NFL career with the Denver Broncos.
Both of these veterans might not help much in the red zone, but they have great hands and run the routes needed to move the chains. Wayne averaged over 12 yards per reception last year and caught over 60 passes, not the numbers that create a buzz with fans, but they are the stats that head coaches can use to keep their job.
Denver will pass the football more than run and having depth is a must, especially if they want another shot at a championship. Signing either of these players isn’t glamorous, but it could be just what this franchise needs for the 2015 season.
