Minnesota Viking RB Adrian Peterson reinstated by the NFL

Peterson will not only be okay for training camp and to play next season, the NFL said, but will be permitted to take part in any of the club’s off-season activities. Peterson was suspended by the NFL in relation to an incident that took place in Texas on May 18 of last year.

He was accused beating his then four-year-old son with a tree branch — which Peterson called a “switch” — and of causing welts, bleeding and scrapes on the boy’s ankles, back, buttocks, genitals and legs. The boy recovered and Peterson has expressed remorse. Peterson has six children with numerous women but only one of them is with his wife Ashley.

Last September Peterson was indicted by a grand jury on felony charges of reckless or negligent injury to the child and had he been found guilty, he could have been sentenced to up to two years in jail. However, on November 4 Peterson pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor reckless assault.

He was fined $4,000, given probation and had to perform 80 hours of community service but did not serve jail time.

The Vikings initially gave their star running back a one-game suspension but the public, the media and sponsors of the NFL cried foul, many insisting that such a crime deserved a far greater punishment. Two weeks after the legal case against him the NFL altered their punishment dramatically.

“Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings was notified today he has been suspended without pay for at least the remainder of the 2014 NFL season and will not be considered for reinstatement before April 15,” the league said. “For violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy in an incident of abusive discipline that he inflicted on his four-year-old son last May.”

The 30-year-old star running back has three years left on a contract that will pay him $12.75 million next season. While the Vikings say they have every intention of keeping him, Peterson has said in the recent past that he does not feel the team fully supported him during the ordeal and he wants a change of scenery.

The Vikings start off-season workouts on Monday but Peterson has not said if he will attend. As of this writing, there’s been no comment from Peterson on his reinstatement.
