With just over two weeks remaining until the trade deadline, its been reported that Toronto is looking to bolster its starting rotation, despite having terrific success in 2016. With the Blue Jays sitting third in the division, a move like they made last year for David Price could be just what this franchise needs to give it a boost over the second half of the season.
The latest rumors have Rich Hill as a possible target and it makes sense. The veteran won’t cost much in money or prospects to acquire. Despite playing much of his career out of the bullpen, the 36-year-old has become a reliable starter in Oakland this season, compiling a 9-3 record with an outstanding 2.25 ERA.
Hill began his baseball career in Chicago with the Cubs and has bounced around, playing for seven different MLB teams in his career, but age seems to fit the lefty as the last three years have been the best in his career.
The former fourth round pick would provide several options for the coaching staff. His relief experience would add depth to the pitching staff and his ability to start makes him a versatile option as the August 1 deadline approaches.
Several other names have been linked in trade talks as the Jays look to ad depth, including Jay Bruce in the outfield and pitcher Andrew Cashner of San Diego, but these players would likely cost the franchise some of its best prospects, hurting the team’s chance for future success. Bruce would add some excitement to an already potent lineup, but the front office will need to determine if the risk is worth the reward, but its clear this team needs to be a buyer in the coming days or risk losing an opportunity to win a World Series.
