MLB Trade Rumors: Mark Melancon to Toronto Blue Jays?

Reports out of Pittsburgh have the Pirates shopping closer Mark Melancon and with just one year left on his contract, the 30-year-old would cost less than $6 million for the 2016 season.

With a league leading 51 saves and a solid 2.23 ERA, the hard-throwing right-hand pitcher will command big money next off season, but would likely cost a team a role player and a couple prospects, good value for such a talented reliever.

The former ninth round pick has bounced around baseball, pitching in Houston, New York, and Boston, but he found his place with the Pirates, saving 100 games over the last three years and becoming one of the most reliable relievers in baseball.

Bleacher Report has suggested the Jays are looking to move outfielder Kevin Pillar this winter. The 26-year-old isn’t a slugger, but he did manage 12 homers and 56 RBI last season and would give the Pirates another solid option in their lineup and a good defensive outfielder that would add depth to their organization.

While no trade talks have been reported between the two sides, they both have what the other needs heading into next season. Toronto now appears set with their rotation and could use some mid-value help in the bullpen, Melancon would give them an MLB All Star caliber closer and the help they would need at the back end of games.

The Pirates are looking for long-term help that won’t break the bank and Pillar is just coming into his own and could help this baseball club for the next five years or more, making this a win-win option for both sides.
