Fox Sports has reported that the team is looking to add another starting pitcher and are looking for an ace. The hope is that adding another stud to the rotation will help the Cards win a World Series championship in 2015.
With a number of big name stars on the trading block, it appears the player tops on the list is Detroit Tigers David Price. The veteran lefty was acquired down the stretch of last season by Detroit, but with the Tigers looking to resign free agent Max Scherzer, having two big contracts isn’t ideal for a mid-market team.
Detroit has expressed interest in trading the 29-year-old, especially if they can get a couple young prospects in return.
The former first round draft pick of Tampa Bay finished the 2014 season with a 15-12 record and a solid 3.26 ERA. Price lost his only post season start, but allowed just two runs over eight innings in defeat to Baltimore.
Price has the arm, experience, and leadership skills that make this deal probable. The Cardinals have the money and prospects and with both clubs looking to make more moves before the start of the 2015 MLB season, a deal could happen in the coming weeks and with the right player combination, this could become one of the best deals made this off-season.
Scherzer is another name that has been linked in a possible move, but his contract demands could be too much for St Louis. Cole Hamels is another possibility, but the Philadelphia Phillies starter would like to move closer to his Southern California hometown, possibly causing some friction if dealt.
Whatever the Cardinals decide, this team has all the pieces necessary to make a run at a title this season and adding any of these three pitchers would increase their chances for success this year.
