Toronto made several moves over the off season in hopes of contending in the tough AL East, but the Jays’ still need depth on their staff, especially in the bullpen and that has led to reports of a possible trade in the coming weeks.
Bleacher Report writer Rick Weiner has suggested they look at Brad Ziegler of Arizona as a possible answer. The 35-year-old has become a solid reliever with over 250 appearances and a 2.63 ERA over the last four years, but the Diamondbacks are transitioning to a younger squad and paying over $10 million for the next two seasons makes little sense.
Toronto has another problem as backup catcher Dioner Navarro is in the final year of his contract and has stated he likely won’t return after the upcoming season is finished. Navarro is solid at the plate, something the D-Backs lack at this current time and bringing in some help for a year could help any younger prospects gain some added experience in the Minor Leagues.
The Blue Jays’ are looking to start the upcoming MLB season with a positive clubhouse and hopefully a strong win-loss record. Creating a buzz with the fans north of the border is important and making a deal now could rid the team of a distraction and get them the help they need in the later innings of close games.
While trades at this time of year are rare, a move now could give both ball clubs just what they need for this season. This trade isn’t a long-term solution, but it allows both teams to enter the year on a positive note and possibly allows the Blue Jays’ to finally make a run at the post season.
