MLB News and Rumors: Kenley Jansen to NY Mets?

Baseball experts have taken a look at the good and bad for New York and while the bullpen was solid this season, lack of big game experience likely cost them in the wild-card game against San Francisco.

Closer Jeurys Familia led the Majors with 51 saves and his setup man Addison Reed was also excellent, but failure to secure wins in crucial situations has led to plenty of speculation and what general manager Sandy Alderson can do this winter to make this franchise stronger next year.

John Harper of the New York Daily News has suggested adding LA Dodgers free agent closer Kenley Jansen. The 29-year-old would give the team one of the best bullpens in the league and give manager Terry Collins some flexibility when it comes to match ups late in games.

With 47 saves and an outstanding 1.83 ERA, the veteran reliever had a terrific year, but he really shined in the playoffs, especially his three inning, 50+ pitch performance against Chicago. The LA Dodgers are expected to cut payroll over the off season, leading many to believe they won’t attempt to resign Jansen, a move that will strengthen whoever adds the MLB All Star pitcher.

The NY Mets have other issues to deal with this summer, including what to do with free agent Yoenis Cespedes and the club option they have on Jay Bruce. Alderson will need to spend some cash to keep this team a National League contender next season, but as history shows, if the other team can’t score, it makes it much easier to win ball games and that should be the priority this winter.
