Mendoza (24-2-1,19 KOs), who was defending his IBF light flyweight title for the first time, is a knockout artist, having stopped 19 of his 26 opponents since his pro career debut in September 2007
With the technical decision, Mendoza retained his IBF light flyweight title in his home court following a severe cut in his left eye that prompted the referee to stop the fight before the end of the sixth round after consulting the ring physician.
The injury was caused by an accidental headbutt that happened in the first six rounds as the two fighters mixed it up in the ring.
With the referee’s decision, the judges had to refer to the scorecards in the first six rounds. The tally showed Mendoza was ahead on points with the score of 59-52, 60-52 and 60-52, all in his favor.
Both fighters were severely injured but it was ruled by the ring physician that Melindo was still fit to continue while Mendoza’s injury was more serious, which necessitated a stoppage of the fight.
The referee called Melindo’s attention on his repeated low blows and warned him that he would be penalized for the same offense which he did on the fifth round when he slapped Melindo with a point deduction.
It was Melindo’s second attempt to grab a world title from a Mexican opponent. In his first attempt, he lost to Juan Francisco Estrada in Macau, China via a unanimous decision. It was his first loss in his pro career.
With the win, Mendoza improved his record to 24 wins with two defeats and a draw while Melindo dropped to 32-2-0.
