Mayweather training for Pacquiao, hires lefty sparring partner

Mayweather spars with Corley

It is not the first time the one-time WBO and USBA light welterweight title holder DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley has sparred with Mayweather. Corley (41-22-1 with 25 KOs) helped Mayweather get ready for his win over Zab Judah (also a lefty) in 2006.

The 40-year-old Corley last fought in 2014 and has himself met Mayweather in the ring; he was the 47-0 Mayweather’s 32nd win in May of 2004, a 12-round unanimous decision.

Along with getting down to work in his Las Vegas gym under the tutelage of his trainer and father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., Mayweather took time for a photo op. Hollywood stars Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood visited his gym and Mayweather posted a photo of the three of them on social media; he also tweeted his appreciation of Cage’s visit.

There will be more time for photos as next week, on Wednesday, March 11, a press conference to hype the fight will be held in Los Angeles. It will be the second time Mayweather and Pacquiao meet — they met last month for the first time at an NBA game in Miami — and the last time until they’re in the ring together on May 2.

What’s the early betting line on the fight, expected to be the highest grossing in boxing history and among the biggest events in the history of sport? Mayweather opened as a 21/2 – 1 favorite over Pacquiao but veteran fight bookie Jimmy Vaccaro said that over the weekend a lot of money was put down for the Pacman and the gap narrowed.

Mayweather vs. Lefties

As for fighting southpaws, there’s been talk for years that Mayweather was avoiding Pacquiao because he was a southpaw. That was the claim of Bob Arum last September; Arum, who runs Top Rank promotions, promotes Pacquiao now but once worked with Mayweather.

“I promoted the guy for 10 years and I know how difficult it was to get him in the ring with any southpaw,” Arum said. “When you talk about a southpaw who can move like Manny, that’s not the kind of opponent that Mayweather feels he would do well against.”

Mayweather, for the record, feels he can do well against Pacquiao, telling media last week that while he respects his opponent he does not feel Pacquiao presents any great challenge. It will be, he said, just another fight, and another win.

Incidentally, when it comes to lefties in addition to beating Corley and Judah, both UD 12-round bouts, Mayweather knocked out lefty Victor Ortiz in 2011 and gave lefty Robert Guerrero a thrashing in 2013.
