Pacquiao has spent over five years to get Mayweather in the ring with him in what appears to be the biggest, richest fight in boxing history but his efforts isn’t enough to get Mayweather’s consent.
The Filipino boxing star has maintained that the fight isn’t all about money saying he wants to please the fans by giving them the fight that they have been wanting to see.
Pacquiao has given Mayweather until January 31 to sign the fight contract or he will move on to find a new opponent for his first fight in 2015.
While Pacquiao was doing promotional appearances in the US, he made a side trip to London to have a private meeting with Prince Harry at the Buckingham Palace.
After meeting with the Prince, Pacquiao met with former sparring partner Amir Khan and they talked about a possible fight by the end of May or early June in case the Mayweather fight talks fall apart for the last time.
After close to six years of exchanging pleasantries (and trash-talking), Mayweather has shown fight fans that he isn’t afraid of Pacquiao—as partisan fight fans had pictured him to be—by initiating a meeting with the reigning WBO welterweight champion during the NBA game between Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks early this week at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida.
But the hype that was created by their initial meeting has faded almost instantly when Mayweather posted on Shots a message saying “they continue to lie about making the fight.”
“Laying back, relaxing, enjoying good weather, palm trees and piña coladas. While they continue to lie about making the fight… I’m just going to continue to travel and explore the world on my private jet,” said Mayweather, who seems to be vacationing in Jamaica.
There are talks that Mayweather will seize the moment to announce the long-awaited fight on Sunday’s Super Bowl opening games but with Mayweather’s latest statement on Shots about the ongoing talks, it appears that no such announcement will take place.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao is set to return to the Philippines on February 7 after attending the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC which will also be attended by President Barack Obama.
