Mayweather and Pacquiao meet in hotel room, address PPV issues

Mayweather – Pacquiao meet courtside

Koncz said they were happy Mayweather reached out at halftime of a Miami Heat-Milwaukee Bucks game. At that time they exchanged cell numbers and the three hooked up up after the game in Pacquiao’s Miami hotel room. Notably absent from the meeting was Top Rank’s Bob Arum and from what Koncz said about their talk it was very encouraging for fight fans.

“Floyd said he wants to see the fight happen, and I have no reason to doubt Floyd’s sincerity,” Koncz said Wednesday. “It was a very good meeting. Very positive. I think Manny and Floyd respect each other, so let’s see where it goes.”

Koncz noted that Mayweather had two issues regarding the broadcasting of the fight and said both were addressed, though gave no details. It is not surprising the pay-per-view broadcast would need negotiating considering that Mayweather is under contract to Showtime and Pacquiao to HBO. As Steve Carp wrote in the Las Vegas Journal, the two broadcasters are involved in the talks and have been since the start.

Koncz: Meeting “very positive”

Another issue Koncz told media is not one to be concerned about was Pacquiao’s declaration of last week that if Mayweather did not sign for a fight with him by the end of January he would move on to another fighter, with speculation being that fighter would be Amir Khan. That deadline, Koncz said, was not set in stone.

“There was no solid deadline but Manny wanted to make it clear he wasn’t going to just wait around for Floyd,” he said. “Obviously, we’re hoping we can continue to make progress. We’ll see what happens in the next few days.

“I know Manny wants the fight, and I know Floyd wants the fight,” he added. “The fact they talked was very constructive toward getting a deal. Hopefully all the issues will get resolved and we’ll have a fight.”

This meeting, Koncz, could lead to a contract, and soon. “You could tell by their body language that this was very positive. It was for a good hour or more,” he said. “It was a business meeting, but it wasn’t a tense business meeting. I think that’s because they both have mutual respect for each other.

“We’ll determine what will happen over the next couple of days.”
