Had it not been for the face-to-face meeting between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao at the NBA game in Florida, the fight that every fight fan in the world wants to see would not have been possible.
Stephen Espinoza, Showtime Sports Executive Vice President & General Manager said the unexpected meeting by Mayweather and Pacquiao helped the teams in crafting the fight deal.
“I believe that the direct line of communication between Floyd and Manny cleared up a lot of doubts on both of their minds and renewed their commitment to getting this fight done," said Espinoza in a hurriedly convened conference call shortly after Mayweather officially announced the fight.
The direct communication between the two elite fighters made the talks easier for the negotiating parties who were working on the terms of the agreement.
“The meeting between Floyd and Manny at the Miami Heat game certainly greased the wheels in getting through the final stages of the process," he added.
Espinoza acknowledged the role played by CBS Corporation President & CEO Leslie Moonves in getting the fight done for May 2 as previously announced by Mayweather.
The Showtime head said that Moonves was part of the negotiating process and was there all along during the entire process, refusing to accept no for an answer from both parties in the talks.
“We’re thrilled to be a part of what we expect to be a record-breaking event. This deal is a product of a lot of hard work with some blood, sweat and tears along the way," Espinoza added.
In the brief conference call after the announcement by Mayweather, no other information was disclosed regarding the list of the fighters who will make up the the undercard of the huge event.
Aside from the date and venue, no other details were disclosed other than the previously-announced drug testing protocols and the 60-40 sharing of the fight purse in favor of Mayweather.
But more details are expected to be announced shortly.
