It's been a fight in the making for six years now so why not add something extra to it? That's exactly what World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman said the WBC is going to do as they will mark the occasion with a special belt.
Mayweather Pacquiao:welterweight belts on line
Sulaiman and the WBC are touting the fight among the biggest in the history of the sport and it will also be one of the most lucrative events in the history of sports. The WBC press release on the belt they'll be fashioning noted the two fighters will have fans all over the world watching.
The message was clear: the Mayweather - Pacquiao bout is good for boxing and an occasion that deserves something extra.
"For this special recognition, I would like to have emeralds or platinum, but everything will be defined during the next weeks," Sulaiman said on the WBC website. "This is because of the magnitude of the event, which will be broadcast via TV networks globally."
These two fighters have won multiple belts, with Pacquiao (57-5-2) being the only fighter to have won world titles in eight different weight classes and Mayweather (47-0) a five-division world champion.
Fighting at 147lbs there'll be three championship belts on the line. Pacquiao owns the WBO welterweight belt and Mayweather the WBC and WBA belts. In addition to those belts, the lineal crown is up for grabs, a champion known as "the man who beat the man." There's only one in a division, unlike belts, of which at last count there were over 100 in 17 divisions.
Fight "came in a good moment"
But belts and crowns aside, this fight will be the most watched ever because it pits two men believed to be the best pound for pound fighters on Earth (Mayweather is considered the best). And both are fighters who, like them or not, have strong personalities and are in the public eye. It could be a battle that will bring boxing back into the forefront.
"It came in a good moment and it will be an emotive event," Sulaiman said. "Both are obviously putting their legacy at stake, to prove who's the best, satisfying an enormous created expectancy. They are also competing to be considered one of the best 10 fighters in the entire boxing history."
May 2, MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and on pay-per-view.
