Matthysse scores majority decision victory against Provodnikov

In the action-packed main event of the evening, Matthysse got an early break when Provodnikov drew blood from an accidental headbutt in the second round, which served as Matthysse’s target in the succeeding rounds.

While Provodnikov started slow in the opening round, he got active after the headbutt leading to a series of exchanges in the middle rounds.

In round 5, Matthysse scored hard-earned points from power punches and jabs to the attacking Russian brawler.

In the middle rounds, they went toe-to-toe as both men threw power shots that landed on targets. There were no knockdowns but Matthysse was earning the needed points for a decision.

Aware that he needed to pile up points in the later rounds, Provodnikov launched an eleventh round attack on Matthysse but the Argentine fought back and managed to maintain his lead through the last round.

Judges scored the fight by majority decision in favor of Matthysse with scores of 115-113 twice and 114-114.

“I think I dominated the fight, I knew I had the best hits,”Matthysse said after the fight. “Ruslan is a tough fighter, he took everything I threw at him. I have a lot of respect for him.”

“There was a point when I thought that they would stop the fight because of Ruslan’s cut, but his team was able to control it. I hurt my hand in the sixth round, but I kept going because I wanted to prove that I am the best in the division and that I am ready for the toughest fighters. I want to move forward and fight the winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao,” Matthysse added.

For his part, Provodnikov said that Matthysse is the hardest puncher that he has fought in his career but he never wanted the fight stopped.

“He is the hardest puncher I have ever fought but I fight as hard as I can to the very end,” said Provodnikov. “I never want the fight stopped. The only time would be when I am on my back.”

Provodnikov was aiming for his second win since losing to Chris Algieri but with his loss against Matthysse, he has to reexamine his chances of getting back for another shot at the WBO light welterweight title which he lost to Algieri last year.
