Former WBA, WBO and IBF welterweight champion Antonio Margarito scored a split decision victory over Ramon Alvarez Saturday night at the Baja California Center, Rosarito Beach, Mexico to bag the vacant WBO Inter-Continental light middleweight title.
Alvarez came up the aggressor in the opening round with a couple of combinations that landed on targets but Margarito was determined to put up a good defense toward the end of the round. In the second round, Alvarez continued with his aggression prompting Margarito to to fortify his defense while throwing jabs and heavy punches with few power shots finding their way to Alvarez' body.
In the third round Margarito started to come forward, becoming the aggressor as Alvarez was struggling with his defense, allowing Margarito to land on intended targets with his unobstructed power shots.
It was give and take for both fighters in the middle rounds but on the eighth round Margarito scored a knockdown over Alvarez after a series of left and right combinations that elicited a wild roar from the crowd. But Alvarez managed to rise with wobbly legs to beat the count.
Alvarez tried to come back aggressively in the ninth round after sensing that he was behind on the scorecards but Margarito held on until the last round for the split decision verdict. One judge had it at 95-94 for Alvarez while the two judges had an identical score of 97-92 for Margarito
After the fight Margarito called out Alvarez' younger brother Canelo Alvarez, who was inside the venue to help Ramon in the just-concluded fight.
“I want the big fights - [Miguel] Cotto, Canelo. I don't want a rematch with Ramon. I am ready for big fights. Now I want to beat [Ramon's] brother Saul." Margarito said.
Canelo is set to face Liam Smith on Sept. 17 and his next fight after Smith is already penciled for December 10. Margarito said he wants to be Canelo's opponent on that date.
It was Margarito's second win since losing to Miguel Cotto in their rematch which took place at the Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York in 2011.
